Apparently the LA premiere is not scrapped after all.... see this article (which really belongs on the Oprah topic and may be there already..)
REEL TIME: Michael Bodey Oprah's sneak preview November 05, 2008 BAZ Luhrmann's film Australia has the film industry in overdrive, in terms of production as well as gossip. That will happen when you're still crewing up, or tapping people for their expertise, three weeks before a film's release. But Reel Time can confirm a final edit of the film (minus finished sound and visual effects) was screened two weeks ago to Oprah Winfrey and her audience, before interviews were taped with the film's stars Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman, which will be aired on November 10. Incredibly, not one word from that audience has found its way on to the film-hungry internet ahead of the film's November 26 general release. That final edit has also been seen by many executives on the 20th Century Fox lot in Los Angeles and they too have kept shtum. Exhibitors are being told to expect a film of between 2 1/2 and three hours. The film's score and visual effects are still being worked on, a fortnight before its Australian premiere on November 19. The timing of that premiere has caused some consternation as it will follow Australian tours by Quantum of Solace's Daniel Craig and Madagascar 2's Ben Stiller and Chris Rock. So Australia's first audience will likely be suffering from overload; just the thing for a two hour-plus film. As late as last week, the film was anticipated to premiere here later, meaning the Australia team would have to abandon a Hollywood premiere because of a timing clash. That idea was quickly punted. As Variety reports, Kidman, Jackman and Luhrmann will quickly jet to the LA press junket on November 20 and 21 and a New York premiere on November 24. Then comes an intense December of Academy Award campaigning. And the budget? As a result of intense recent activity, original estimates of $130 million may now be closer to $180 million or even $200 million. http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story...2-15803,00.html |

Darwin plans for the special screening on Nov. 18 ....
QUOTE Darwin to celebrate living history at premier 5th November 2008, 14:30 WST It will be short on Hollywood glitz and glamour but the Darwin premiere of the movie Australia will sparkle with living history. A screening will be held in the steamy Northern Territory capital on November 18 to coincide with the worldwide premiere of Baz Luhrmann’s highly-anticipated epic. And as Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman step onto the red carpet in Sydney, Darwin will recognise those living in the Top End during World War II. “I am inviting territorians who lived through the bombing of Darwin and are living in the territory today to the special screening,” Chief Minister Paul Henderson said today. “It’s also a chance for the territory community to recognise in some way the contribution of these people over the decades.” The bombing of Darwin 66 years ago is an often forgotten episode in Australian history. At least 243 people were killed and hundreds more injured in Darwin during Japanese bombing raids on February 19, 1942. The first 40-minute raid badly damaged the town, demolishing eight ships including the destroyer USS Peary with the loss of 91 seamen, and all but one of Darwin’s warplanes. The destruction will form the backdrop for the final scenes of the film, when Hollywood superstar Kidman wanders along Darwin wharf after driving 2000 cattle across the Top End. The $130 million romantic outback epic centres on Lady Sarah, played by Kidman, who becomes the owner of a cattle station before World War II. She enlists the help of a rough-hewn drover, Jackman, in a fight against cattle barons who plot to take over her land. The pair drive 2000 head of cattle across the Top End and get caught in Australia’s first attack on home soil. “Darwin will have a special screening,” Henderson said, adding that it would pay tribute “to the role that Darwin played not only in the movie, but the role that Darwin played during World War II”. A hotline has been opened for people keen to attend the opening night and 350 seats are up for grabs. “I have no idea how many people are still living in Darwin who were here during World War II but we will certainly try and fit everybody in,” Mr Henderson said. “I can’t think of a more appropriate audience to have than citizens who lived through the bombing.” The film will be released nationally on November 26. http://www.thewest.com.au/default.aspx?Men...ontentID=106506 This post has been edited by Meisha: Nov 5 2008, 04:54 PM -------------------- Neverland simply doesn’t exist. Bowen's plans for the special screening on Nov. 18...... Sounds like it would be quite an event with "`all the razzmatazz'".
QUOTE Bowen to host world premiere of Australia CHRIS QUAGLIATA November 5th, 2008 BOWEN will roll out the red carpet when it hosts the world premiere of Baz Luhrmann's epic film Australia. After months of uncertainty, 20th Century Fox announced yesterday that the town dubbed `Bowenwood' would get a slice of Hollywood glitz and glamour with the gala event on November 18. Stars Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman will join Luhrmann, his wife production designer Catherine Martin and other Australian celebrities for a premiere at the George St Greater Union cinemas in Sydney's CBD on the same night. Fears that Bowen, a key shooting location for the film, would miss out altogether were quashed with the announcement the town would host a simultaneous screening, along with Darwin. A separate celebration will be held in the fourth shooting location, Kununurra, in Western Australia's East Kimberley region, at a later date. "With the huge anticipation for this film, these events will be the first chance for people to discover what promises to be Baz's next cinematic masterpiece," 20th Century Fox managing director Marcos Oliveira said. However, it was unclear whether a star of the film would attend the Bowen screening. A 20th Century Fox spokeswoman said yesterday the final details of each premiere were still being worked out. The Bowen screening will be held at the historic Summergarden Cinemas. The theatre became famous for screening `rushes' of each day's takes for Luhrmann and his crew during the filming of Australia in April and May last year. Owner Ben De Luca said he was `overjoyed' his cinema would hold its first world premiere. "It's only in the last week where I knew the date but I knew that it was coming," he said. "They promised me that it would come 12 months ago. They told me then when they were filming in Bowen that it was going to happen and I believed them. "A lot of other people didn't and that's what disappointed me because I kept saying ... that the premiere would happen in Bowen in some shape or form. "We're flat out at the moment preparing for it." Mr De Luca said the cinema would be transformed for the event with a traditional red carpet, coloured lighting and `all the razzmatazz'. A film projector used in the movie will be on display in the foyer. Whitsunday Mayor Mike Brunker, a vocal campaigner for a Bowen premiere, said it would be a fitting reward for town. "I'm glad they looked after us and we're very appreciative," he said. "We were going to run with an afternoon event on the public release but this will make it so much more special. "I'm sure it will be an unforgettable night for the people of Bowen." Mr De Luca said the film print was expected to arrive in Bowen on the day of the premiere, closely guarded by a 20th Century Fox executive. "It will sit beside him on a passenger seat on a plane, he will bring it to us and we will prepare it and it will virtually be in lockdown then until it leaves our premises," he said. Mr De Luca expected the film would return to Sydney shortly after the screening. http://www.townsvillebulletin.com.au/artic...771_hpnews.html This post has been edited by Meisha: Nov 5 2008, 05:06 PM -------------------- Neverland simply doesn’t exist. Thanks for the Darwin and Bowen stories Meisha. Just came to post one of them but pleased it is already here.
Was the Summergarden Cinema where you spotted Nicole and Keith one time when you were in Bowen? I love how Darwin will have the WWII veterans there. I wonder too how many are still alive. There will be a few. Hmm. wonder if there is a chap from WWII there I am trying to locate. I think he may not be alive but he was rumoured to be up in Darwin. Hope the veterans enjoy it. Someone sent me a competition to win tickets in Melbourne today but sadly I was not on the computer til now so too late. Anyone here go in it?! And win? Click to enlarge ![]() |
