 Posted on Sat, Feb. 04, 2006 PSU grad fits right in with 'Out of Practice' By Jeffrey Allen Federowicz For the CDT Ty Burrell looks familiar, maybe it's because you've seen him in photos for upcoming films starring Nicole Kidman, Robert Downey Jr., Jennifer Aniston and Winona Ryder. Perhaps you recognize Burrell from his starring role on the hit CBS comedy "Out of Practice." Or maybe you remember seeing him around Happy Valley. Burrell, a TV, stage and film actor, is a 1997 graduate of Penn State with a Master of Fine Arts degree in acting -- a degree that helped him on his way to stardom and entertaining millions of viewers, at least in front of the camera. "I was, and am, the dullest man to ever pass through Happy Valley," Burrell said in a recent phone interview from his home in Los Angeles. "I was not a wild student. I was so boring that when I arrived at parties, people would get quiet like I was a narc." And now that he has made a name for himself in Hollywood, not much has changed. "My life couldn't be any less glamorous. In fact, nothing's changed at all. I'm still boring, only now I've brought my dullness out to L.A. I'm quieting parties down all over the Southland now," Burrell, 38, said. Although he might not be the life of the party, his acting career has taken on a life of its own. In "Out of Practice," Burrell plays Oliver Barnes, a petty and narcissistic plastic surgeon who has an addiction to attractive women. The show, which deals with a family of doctors who have very little in common except the medical profession, also stars Henry Winkler, Stockard Channing, Christopher Gorham, Paula Marshall and Jennifer Tilly. " 'Out of Practice' has been a dream job. I've never had such an extended dose of fun and reward," he said. "We're so lucky to have the writers we have (Christopher Lloyd and Joe Keenan, of "Frasier" fame). It's truly like doing a little farce every week. "The cast is really starting to gel at this point ... and the ratings have been a pleasant surprise over the past couple of months. We're going on hiatus from the air for two months, but we're coming back in March with all new shows. It should be a lot of fun." In the next few months, Burrell will continue to add to his already impressive filmography with four feature films: "Friends with Money" starring Aniston, Joan Cusack and Francis McDormand; "The Darwin Awards" with Joseph Fiennes and Ryder; "Down in the Valley" with Edward Norton; and "Fur," starring Kidman and Downey. He previously appeared in "In Good Company," the 2004 remake of "Dawn of the Dead" and "Black Hawk Down." Not bad for a kid from Ashland, Ore. "Working with Nicole (Kidman) was great," Burrell said. "She was just amazing and really gets into the part. You can tell she is in it for the craft and not just for the glory."  A kid from Ashland, OR and he's 38. Funny.Thank you Foxy for the article. His statement about Nicole reminded me of the video here in NKU when she got the Australia honor. She said over there that in terms of work she was still discovering many things, and she still felt enticed by it. Oh I loove Ashland. It's such a cute little town. The Shakespeare Festival they have every year is amazing...so much fun to see.
