I found this interesting although distressing article on Diane Arbus. There's a mention of Nicole in a part of it. As I said I thought it was interesting and I was drawn to it also because of the picture on the cover of a book called Revelations.
Here's everything.

Marie

The Tease Continues
by Charlie Finch
from artnet magazine.

In an age when nothing is seemingly forbidden and everything is on the table, the last frontier of the verboten is the tease of death.

In the art world, we face a similar dilemma with the work of Diane Arbus (1923-1971). In her current successful traveling retrospective, organized by her daughter, everything is reportedly shown, including Arbus’ voluminous diaries, her methods of taking photographs and her personal thoughts on the often mentally shaky subjects whom she romanced.

But in the spirit of the Forbidden, one "treasure" remains, the allegedly grisly self-orchestrated photograph of Arbus’ suicide. According to the revelation in the Arbus exhibition catalogue, Diane Arbus over a chilling weekend set up a series of cameras, which depicted over a lengthy period her self-immolation slitting her wrists in a bathtub.

So, while everything Arbus appears to have been dumped on the public, the tease remains. Perhaps we will see Nicole Kidman in the forthcoming Arbus biopic earning another Oscar by slitting her thin Aussie wrists in the bathtub, but this still will not satisfy the hunger for what lies beyond.

For guidance let’s turn to Marcel Duchamp’s Etant Donnes, the secret project ultimately revealed in the PMA after Duchamp’s death. Since art is all about what we most want to see and aren’t allowed to see in this context, perhaps the Arbus daughters could arrange for these tantalizingly presumably unlookable photographs to be released after their deaths.

Let the beholder beware!

i hope so too. but i was watching this show about oscars and stuff and some people said

that its very rare that an actor or actress could win an oscar twice

because the academy thinks that they already payed there respects

to them the first time, and that they dont need to do it again..

but NICOLE IS SO GREAT I BET SHE COULD DO IT AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN! rose4.gif rose4.gif rose4.gif rose4.gif rose4.gif

I think the diversity in roles played is key. I'm reminded of Tom Hanks winning what I think were back-to-back Best Actor Oscars for "Forrest Gump" and "Philadelphia".

Exactly Mariposa! I thought of Tom Hanks as well. If the role is really riveting and the actor/actress worthy - it can happen. She's got the image, grace and talent to be a serious contender for a second win. Arbus is certainly a complex character...I'm looking so forward to seeing it.

Marie - thanks for the article. rose4.gif Information I wasn't aware of...

Thanks Marie. I will see if I can take a look at that book at my public library. There was an exhibition at the New York Met titled Diane Arbus Revelations, so I'm guessing the book might be about the pictures showcased in that exhibition.

I don't much care if NK wins another Oscar for Fur, or not. I only hope that Fur turns out to be a great film that knocks everybody's socks off. From the looks of it, and going by the director's history, it will be too weird to garner the votes required for an Oscar. But one can only hope that one likes it. Oscars are too unpredictable, and ultimately too useless to spend one's time trying to predict.

I saw this film called Morvern Callar, which won some prizes at Sundance. Thoroughly, mindblowingly weird. There was not a snowball's chance in hell that such a film could even enter the Oscar race, but I loved it. If Fur is half as good, that is enough for me.

Thanks Marie rose4.gif I had been wondering if someone would post this. I could not decide myself as it sounded a bit depressing to me as well.

I have the book on our Fur page though http://nicolekidmanunited.com/NicoleKidman.../Fur/index.html and now, thanks to you Marie, we have a write-up to go with it.

According to a previous article we have here, it has been said the film will not focus on the suicide of Arbus and rather be a more uplifting film. I hope so.

I agree Polaris (!!!) , an Oscar is not important here. If this is a great film with Nicole at her best, then I will be very happy. happy.gif

I've never heard about Diane before Nicole joined the movie. After some researchs I made I think she's absolutely great. So sad she had a strong depression which couldn't let her live anymore.
Playing Diane Arbus is a challenge and I'm sure Nicole did an amazing job.

Of course, Nathi. In the end, it doesn't matter two figs whether she wins an Oscar or not. huggle.gif In part it's a popularity contest; current social conscience selection - sometimes just plain arbitrary. lol.gif The real reward is a wonderful performance in a beautiful film (at least for her fans)! An Oscar is icing on the cake but it's not a must. Of course, I hope she gets nominated so I get a chance to see her dressed up on the red carpet. Hey - that's worthwhile! lol.gif And nominees typically do more interviews during awards season so there are added benefits if she gets nominated! happy.gif

I know it sounded a bit strange, but it's probably the point of view of the person, trying to reveal the pattern of some artists who have different ideas in their heads than us.
Since I'm not so updated lately with much Nicole news, I didn't know that the film wanted to show a different, more positive side of Diane Arbus. I guess they're trying to focus more on her art? hmm, anyway I think this is all but a great experience for Nicole to live...another one.

That's OK Marie. I was not expecting everyone to remember that about the more positive aspect of the film. That is why I made a point of saying it so those who missed it last time would know. Yes, the implication was they would focus on how she became such a reknowned photographer.

I am pleased that will be the approach of the film (if the article is true). It is tragic enough when a person ends that way, but even more tragic if that is all we now remember of that person, and forget the actual person and their achievements.

I hope "Fur" and Nic's other films will be successful at the box office because box office success is a critical factor for determining an actor's ability to get roles in future films.

I'm reading Patricia Bosworth's biography of Diane Arbus. It is pretty interesting reading. Diane and her family were Jewish. Her family made their fortune in the fashion industry in New York City in the 1920's.

Nicole has never had much success at the BO in all her career but the roles keep coming lol.gif. A movie like Fur isn't one that will make much money, it has a very small budget ($12m) but it looks to me like just an indie movie, I think we are looking at a limited release here even less than Birth.
