Foxy, I don’t know whether this short interview was already posted somewhere on this board. If so, please delete this post. looking.gif

Q&A: Nicole Kidman

By Sara Brady

PREMIERE: You won an Oscar for playing Virginia Woolf, and now you're portraying another troubled artist, photographer Diane Arbus, in Steven Shainberg's Fur.
Fur is an imaginary portrait, not a biography. It's about a woman who's in an existence that is very domestic, and she has this creative soul that has to be released. It covers this very, very small period, and it's using Arbus as inspiration, really. It's more about the unknown, about seeking out ways in which you're going to express yourself in the world.

Why is it called Fur?
Robert Downey Jr. is covered in fur. [laughs] I said that so matter-of-factly because I saw him every day for three months. I don't find it at all odd.

It sounds a little tricky.
I suppose it seems completely bizarre, but I don't think it will be once you see it. If you look at Secretary [Shainberg's previous film], I don't think that was difficult to grasp. He's very bold in his storytelling, Steven, which is why it's wonderful to be a part of his world.

Why did you pick The Visiting, which is a loose remake of Invasion of the Bodysnatchers, as your first horror movie since The Others?
I don't know if it's a horror movie. [Director] Oliver [Hirschbiegel, who did Downfall] describes it as a psychological thriller with horror elements. I'm always drawn to women who are having to overcome things or that have something taken away from them. No matter how extraordinary the story, I just always try to base it in truth.

Looks new to me. Thanks, marilyn. rose4.gif I didn't really know why it was called Fur but that would make sense. I've only seen the pics of Robert with the mask on.

I believe it also has something to do with the fact that Arbus' parents made their fortune in the garment industry.

Thanks Marilyn for the interview. rose4.gif We do not have this here as far as I am aware and I loved getting these oh so few but informative answers from Nicole.

Her first answer on Fur reassures me the film will focus more on Arbus' work rather than the tragic ending. I do hope so (for my sake).

Did you get this from the actual magazine? I am wondering what the cover looks like so I can watch out for it in Australia and scan if for us.

To me it's still a bit odd the name of the film, probably because I don't understand what Nicole meant, my English is not very good tonight. It may be part of the whole idea of the movie, the whole thing about the short period of time that they decided to show about Diane Arbus' life. Thanks for the explanations so far written though hugs.gif

Luv,
Marie Xx

Thanks for the interview. huggle.gif #

I liked the last answer that she is drawn to women who lost something... even though I wished the Interviewer had asked why that is! looking.gif

IT's interesting at the beginning, when the author mentions playing Diane Arbus as a follow-up to playing Virginia Woolf, and Nicole remarks (corrects) that Fur is not a "biography, it's an imaginary portrait." (I hope the filmmakers take pains to make that clear in the film, so people are intrigued by who that woman was and perhaps want to know more about the truth - but don't assume that they are watching the truth. Then again, that probably can't be prevented in any case.)

It occured to me yesterday that the same term - imaginary portrait - can be said of the character of "Virginia Woolf" in "The Hours" - both the novel and the film portray an imagined day in the life of Virginia Woolf, with some loose grounding in fact (Cunningham certainly did his homework on the subject, as did Kidman; and I don't doubt she did her homework on this project as well.) Both are therefore "imagined portraits" - and on some level or another, very sophisticated forms of fanfiction.

Has Nicole ever done a "straight" or traditional biopic, of the "Walk the Line/Ray" sort? Of course, it could be argued that most or all biographies are a blend of fact, fiction, assumption and pure guesswork. (I recall rumors of "Emma's War" but that has come to naught apparently.)

No, NK has never done a traditional biopic.

Ahhh....a devoted fan. See I've been a fan of her work since Dead Calm but never studied it...just made sure to see all her movies - some several times - I actually loved Far and Away. lol.gif I just thought it was a cute if unbelievable story. And if it came on tv...yes...I'd watch it again. I'm a sucker.
