UPDATE from foxy: Hugh Jackman speaks about being part of the cast. Quick link to video post on this topic is....
End foxy bit. The latest news..... http://comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=14883 Jackman Joins Kidman in Luhrmann's Epic Source: Twentieth Century Fox June 7, 2006 Hugh Jackman, just off the record-breaking success of X-Men: The Last Stand, has agreed to star with Nicole Kidman in writer-director Baz Luhrmann's as yet untitled epic. Jackman, one of today's most in-demand and busiest talents, chose the Luhrmann film over the myriad projects he has been offered in recent weeks. His next film set for release, Darren Aronofsky's The Fountain, is already receiving strong critical buzz. Also awaiting release for the actor are Woody Allen's Scoop and Christopher Nolan's The Prestige. Luhrmann's film, a romantic action-adventure set in northern Australia prior to World War II, centers on an English aristocrat (Kidman) who inherits a ranch the size of Maryland. When English cattle barons plot to take her land, she reluctantly joins forces with a rough-hewn cattle driver (Jackman) to drive 2,000 head of cattle across hundreds of miles of the country's most unforgiving land, only to still face the bombing of Darwin, Australia, by the Japanese forces that had attacked Pearl Harbor only months earlier. With his new film, Luhrmann is painting on a vast canvass, creating a cinematic experience that brings together romance, drama, adventure and spectacle. The film begins pre-production October 2006 and production commences in Australia in February 2007. A third lead, a dark rival for the heroine's love and land, will be announced shortly. YAY!
Here's an article from Reuters confirming the news. QUOTE Jackman replaces Crowe in Luhrmann's Oz pic By Tatiana Siegel LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Just weeks after Russell Crowe dropped out of writer-director Baz Luhrmann's untitled period epic, "X-Men" star Hugh Jackman has signed on to replace the mercurial actor. Jackman will star opposite Nicole Kidman in the 20th Century Fox romantic action-adventure set in northern Australia before World War II. Shooting starts in February. The film centers on an English aristocrat (Kidman) who inherits a ranch the size of Maryland. When English cattle barons plot to take her land, she reluctantly joins forces with a rough-hewn cattle driver (Jackman) to drive 2,000 head of cattle across the country's most unforgiving landscape, only to face the bombing of Darwin, Australia, by Japanese forces. After news leaked that Crowe was dropping out because of differences with the studio, the project appeared to be in jeopardy. Several names, including Heath Ledger, surfaced as a replacement. Luhrmann said Ledger is still a possibility, but for the film's third lead. Jackman enjoys a solid relationship with Fox, coming off the box office success of "X-Men: The Last Stand," in which he reprised his role as Wolverine. Jackman also is attached to star in the studio's thriller "The Tourist." "He just continues to astound in terms of his range, whether it's (his Tony-winning turn in) 'Boy From Oz' or 'Wolverine," Luhrmann said in an interview. "He's always been a leading man, but he is moving toward being an iconic leading man, which is perfect for the story we're doing." Luhrmann also said he expects to work again with his friend Crowe. "I know that Russell and I want to work together. The question is on what," he said. "Working with Russell in the future is something that I definitely look forward to doing." Jackman's upcoming films include Darren Aronofsky's "The Fountain," Woody Allen's "Scoop" and Christopher Nolan's "The Prestige." Luhrmann's credits include "Moulin Rouge" and "William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet." Reuters/Hollywood Reporter link I AM SO HAPPY RIGHT NOW! Hugh Jackman is my favourite actor. I have an obsession with Wolverine - I love the X-Men films! And of course I love other Hugh films as well...I'm just so excited he is involved! I never believed this could happen, but it seems it has, and I'm thrilled! He will be excellent alongside Nic. This is just brilliant news This post has been edited by Vampvan: Jun 7 2006, 06:00 PM -------------------- "The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return"

As reported in Hollywood Reporter:
Jackman joins roundup for Luhrmann pic By Tatiana Siegel Just weeks after Russell Crowe dropped out of writer-director Baz Luhrmann's untitled period epic, fellow Australian Hugh Jackman has signed on to replace the mercurial star. A few happy people. It is such great news isn't it.
It means losing Russell from the film for whatever reason did not make the sky fall in Hugh is a great choice. The way I imagine the film, I think he will suit very well. And I can see Nicole and Hugh working comfortably with each other. And I am glad to see Van happy again! A third lead??!! Now that is interesting. I have not had time to digest the articles properly - too happy!. Have a good trip to China Meisha and make sure you say hello to Nicole for us This post has been edited by friendlyfox: Jun 7 2006, 06:23 PM |

Casting Hugh Jackman is a very good choice and I am happy, that Heath Ledger is still a possibility. Even If he won't be in, I am still intrigued by third lead, probably the villain.
It's interesting, that Nicole will play british, not australian. But maybe some british actors or actresses will join the cast. Too bad there is no another leading female character ( I was hoping to see Naomi Watts, Toni Collette or Cate Blanchett or maybe some british actress) according to the article. I'm really dissapointed, the production will start in february... Bye, bye Lady from Shanghai... once again. I thought, Baz is rushing with male lead, because he wants start shooting earlier and Russell refuse, because of American Gangster... Very strange situation. |

Okay, I'm a bit calmer now... this news is just so exciting! I'm so thrilled!
I just wanted to point out that the article I posted also gives away the most plot details I've seen so far. We only knew the basics before, but now we have more of an idea about the general storyline... QUOTE The film centers on an English aristocrat (Kidman) who inherits a ranch the size of Maryland. When English cattle barons plot to take her land, she reluctantly joins forces with a rough-hewn cattle driver (Jackman) to drive 2,000 head of cattle across the country's most unforgiving landscape, only to face the bombing of Darwin, Australia, by Japanese forces. So Nic's character owns a ranch, with cattle, and Jackman takes them all on a giant cattle drive! So THIS is where Baz's research into cattle driving comes into things! LOL! Baz went on a cattle drive last year, and I'd always wondered how a cattle drive came into the equation in a plot revolving around WWII. Now it all makes sense! Also - Fabio - Baz is not rushing through his male lead. Remember this movie was originally planned to film in August this year. A couple of months ago, the starting date was pushed back until February next year. It is unfortunate that this will effect Nic's other projects, but at least she is still involved, and this movie looks set to be one of her biggest, most exciting movies ever! -------------------- "The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return"

Oh wow thanks so much for the interesting news.
I don´t know much about Hugh and I am not the type to watch X-Men, but the stuff about the plot sounds so exciting. I love it when Nic plays aristocratic people, it suits her. -------------------- "The ability to believe & not let your mind get in the way.but being different is never easy."

Thank you, Meisha and Bon Voyage!
I was hoping that Hugh Jackman would be cast. I always wanted to see he and Nicole work together. Nicole said she wanted to be in a big romantic movie and I think this definitely fits the bill. Hugh is so diverse in his roles, can't wait to see him as a trail boss. |
