this persone has seen fur today:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0422295/board/thread/46410197 "It's a very interesting, unusual movie. The best part, I thought, were the visuals - but I actually wanted to see more of Arbus' work rather than the beginnings of it. Nicole was good (although you don't really get past that this is Nicole Kidman playing Diane Arbus), Robert Downey Jr. was very fun. The main problem that I had with the writing is that it doesn't really give you much insight into Arbus herself. The main character could be anyone, really. Good, good, I am liking what I'm reading. I hope they make it clear that it is a fictional or imaginary portrait. I can't wait

How could this person have seen Fur?
I mean it´s not in theaters yet, is it? Well assuming he has seen it, it´s not really a good critic. It says Nicole doesn´t disappear behind Diane and you can see she is playing her. That´s a very harsh critic, especially as it´s Nicole´s specialty to totally get lost in a character! -------------------- "The ability to believe & not let your mind get in the way.but being different is never easy."

There are several people who have seen FUR as it was being worked on by the filmmakers, it is just a private screening. It says Nicole doesn´t disappear behind Diane and you can see she is playing her. That´s a very harsh critic, especially as it´s Nicole´s specialty to totally get lost in a character! The comment about the viewer always being aware of Nicole being Nicole might be an entirely personal and subjective thing - another viewer might disagree, so we shall be able to judge for ourselves soon enough. (I honestly had problems "not" seeing Nicole when watching Cold Mountain, whereas I never saw anyone but Virginia when watching The Hours. At first when watching The Human Stain I was distracted out by surfaces - the lipgloss, certain incongruities - and then as the film went on for me the performance just took over and I was swept up in Faunia's rage completely.) I think the person was stating their opinion in an entirely respectful manner, anna. A good and truly dedicated artist can take constructive criticism in the spirit in which it's intended - to learn and grow next time around. This person has posted a balanced review (preview), stating what worked for them and what didn't. That to me is a good critic. A "bad" critic, to me, is one who is unhelpful, overly emotional, who attacks the artists or the subject and makes no attempt to meet it halfway, to understand what the filmmaker is trying to say. I see none of that here. I agree with you that it is her specialty to get "lost" in characters, but she is human and is not going to connect with every character she plays with equal success. (She admitted as much in the interviews for The Stepford Wives - that Joanna was a character she had great difficulty "putting on".) That's part of what makes her filmography so interesting - I'd say we're all dedicated Nicole fans (if we're members of this board) but we don't all like the same films equally. we won't be touched or not by the same performances in the same way. |

Oh with bad critic I just meant that it wasn´t all positive and complimentary.
I also think it seemed like a profound critic. And you´re also right about seeing Nicole in her characters sometimes. I never saw her in The Hours as well, but I saw her in Birthday Girl when she was sweet and seductive at the same time, but I think that doesn´t mean she was bad at acting, it just means that certain aspects of the character are also part of Nicole´s character. I think with Virginia she had really nothing in common except for sometimes feeling very heavy-hearted and depressed! And yeah I am definitley for constructive criticism as well. Now I am really excited to what extent WE will see Nicole in Diane! When it comes to movies especially biopics, especially when the biopic is about someone who passed on a century ago or was never accessible in such a way that people knew his or her personality, I always find it amusing when people say an actor didn't embody a character and you could tell that it was an actor playing a character rather than being the character. For me as a viewer, the most an actor can do is give a good honest performance that sweeps the viewer along. And as this reviewer said, NK was good.

I very rarely see Nicole as Nicole in her characters, so much so, the avatars of her characters are driving me crazy. The other day I was watching the start of a montage (can't remember which one) and the picture from Red's avatar appeared and the first thought that came into my mind was,"what's Red doing in this!" :
Foxy's old avatar used to throw me as well....to me that was Foxy and not Nicole. ETA...it's the stare. This post has been edited by Wiggleurnose: Jun 25 2006, 02:54 AM |

Now I am really excited to what extent WE will see Nicole in Diane! I may have not been clear regarding my opinion of her performance in the Hours, anna, my apoligies for trying to be too clever. What I meant to say was just the opposite of how you felt - I never saw Nicole in that movie (except for a split-second when her eyes widened and her voice rose a fraction of an octave closer to her natural voice while speaking with Leonard while he sat at the breakfast table.) I only saw Virginia, and any parallel between the two women did not occur to me at the time. As skanky said, the thing of it is to be swept along by the performance. The Hours did it for me, but didn't do it for you, both opinions are valid. On the other hand "Birthday Girl" did it for both of us. C'est la vie. Sometimes the best performances an actor can give are as a character least like themselves. Again, I wasn't trying to see Nicole or an aspect of her in the performance of Nadia, or any other character. I don't want to. I want to be "in the moment", as I'm sure you do too. Later on, after I've left the theater and had time to reflect, I admit the temptation to look back, analyze and try to match the performance to the person is irresistable to me. Probably bad of me, I'm sure, although Nicole's choices seem to invite such comparisons more than any current actor I can think of, in part because she seems to choose her roles through intuition and emotion, via her heart more than her head. |

It´s sometimes so frustrating.
I wrote "I never saw Nicole in The Hours as well" and now you write that you didn´t feel that way and all... Well in fact I do agree. Like you, Virginia was Virginia and for me not even a second Nicole was viewable. I hope you understood now what I meant. In fact, I sometimes think it´s rather cute to see an aspect of Nicole in one of her characters, but during the movie, I also try not to think about that, because I personally like to really "be" inside the story and forget anything else. I hope I cleared all misunderstandings now! -------------------- "The ability to believe & not let your mind get in the way.but being different is never easy."

Absolutley no harm.
I am just glad that you now know what I think about The Hours, because I wouldn´t want you to get a wrong impression of my experiencing Nicole´s performances! -------------------- "The ability to believe & not let your mind get in the way.but being different is never easy."

I hope this is the right place to post this rather than start a new topic....
QUOTE • Hot topics included Nicole Kidman and Robert Downey Jr. in Steven Shainberg's Fur, which is a dark, dazzling, almost magical look at the life of the fabled photographer Diane Arbus. Miss Kidman is said to give the performance of her career, with Downey not far behind. At a recent screening for reps who worked on the film and with the actors, the room exploded into a standing ovation as the final credits rolled. One who was there said, "A more jaded audience you cannot imagine. I have never seen such a thing in my life." Fur will be released in November via Picturehouse http://www.baltimoresun.com/features/lifes...-artslife-today |
