Nicole Kidman is canceling appearances to promote her new film Fur, to avoid talking about new husband Keith Urban's decision to check himself into a rehab facility. The pair have been married since June and Urban announced last week that he was seeking treatment for alcohol abuse. Kidman skipped a mini-screening of her film at the Museum of Modern Art on Wednesday night in New York City, which was followed by a posh dinner hosted by the film's executive producer Ed Pressman. According to Fox News, she has also cancelled her appearance at the high-profile New York City premiere on Sunday night, leaving co-star Robert Downey, Jr. and director Steve Shainberg to promote the film. Kidman stars in the film as famed American photographer Diane Arbus, who was noted for her portraits of people on the fringes of society. The Moulin Rouge star has returned to London where she is filming His Dark Materials The Golden Compass:, while Urban remains in rehab in Nashville, Tennessee.

To be honest.. im kinda disappointed that she has cancelled her appearances.. Its her choice during this difficult time.. but most celebrities do tend to go down the red carpet and avoid reporters when they're going through a rough phase.. However, i respect Nicoles decision during this time completely.
I'm disappointed though oh.gif oh.gif oh.gif

I think her decision is ENTIRELY sensible. GIven that reporters want to know all sorts of inappropriate things during the best of times, I shudder to think of how they'd relish picking her apart in a low time. (Oh, wait, they did pick her apart during a low time - five years ago, wasn't it?) Films should be able to sell themselves on their own merits without the stars being paraded before us like marionettes on a string by the studios, and in any case Mr Downey can certainly pick up the slack.

In any case, if we believe ourselves fans the thing to do is support her decision for her life, which is far more important than any career. (Who was it who said "At the end of their life nobody is going to say 'I should have spent more time at the office'." ?) And in the meantime - show support for her decision and go see her film when it comes into your area.

I thought Nicole has said a while ago (before Keith’s rehab) that she wouldn’t be able to attend “Fur” New York premiere due to her filming schedule. In any case, she knows what's best for her and her family.

I too remember that, I think she said she would not be doing interviews to promote Fur in the week before its American release because she had to be in England to work...

How was she supposed to be at the premiere if she was scheduled to be in London for the filming? I too recall reading that she wouldn't be able to be at the premiere because she was filming. Or perhaps when she was prepping for Bewitched, she mastered the art of teleportation. lol.gif

I'm a bit disappointed because I was looking forward to see her shine again on the red carpet, promoting a film. Then, again during these curcumstances, I support her for her decision. It's so sad that the press can never focus on the film, which is the important thing, instead of invading her privacy. I completly understand why she canceled her apperances.

What else is new? we can thank Roger Friedman for writing the original article. The article clearly showed that Friedman has once AGAIN FAILED to check his facts before typing. And so have many of the "cut and paste" reports stemming from his article on news sites, some of them (way before she appeared at Rome) were the first to report that she already released a short statement to say that she would be unavailable. Do they think we have short-term memory? lol.gif

I don't blame her. The press is unscrupulous. You can't even politely say it's your personal life and you don't want to discuss it so it's off limits. They would pound her about it. Journalists today do not draw the line. It's all about sensationalizing every detail of everyones life with very little thought about being ethical.

Good Luck to Nicole in this movie. The previews look like she does an incredible job and dare we say oscar nomination thumbsup.gif

*hangs head* Unfortunately - I DO have short term memory and had quite forgotten about that. And I'm sure that's true for others less commited - the general public and all that ("Out because of film committments" is less attention-grabbing than "Out because hubby's in rehab". Lacks the same drama - and when it comes to modern media, drama counts for everything.)

This is an article that Skanky posted back on Oct 6
http://www.nicolekidmanunited.invisionzone...opic=5505&st=80

Town makes silver screen debut
SUTTON Bridge is bracing itself for its silver screen debut.

Film crews will be in the town at the weekend shooting scenes at the Cross Keys Bridge for the blockbuster The Golden Compass, starring Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig.
Rumours that Sutton Bridge was to be the backdrop for scenes in either the latest Harry Potter instalment or the next James Bond film have been doing the rounds.
But publicist Susan Darcy has confirmed a secondary unit for The Golden Compass will film the bridge opening and closing as it allows a barge to sail through.
Workers were floating the dutch canal barge into the water at Fosdyke on Tuesday so it would be in place by the weekend.
When asked if the two stars will be in town Ms Darcy said she did not know what the full filming schedule contained.
She said: "We have a secondary unit in the area filming some shots which will be dropped into the main action.
We have done some filming in Greenwich and have the main unit at Chatham and Nicole won't be back with us until November. The Golden Compass is the first in a trilogy adapted from Philip Pullman's bestselling His Dark Materials series.
The film is written and directed by Chris Weisz, whose credits include About a Boy and Antz.
Lincolnshire Police have issued a notice to motorists warning of delays and road closures around the bridge but say diversions will be in place.

I have mentioned it before that Nicole was never going to be in New York for Fur. I posted this back on 8 Oct 2006...way before Keith's rehab. Looks like many of us are doing what the media does best...making too many presumption lol.gif .

http://www.news.com.au/sundaymail/story/0,...5003420,00.html

Nicole Puzzler

AMID the confusing messages about Fur, the next Nicole Kidman film on the release schedule, comes a more definite statement from Kidman herself – she will not be available for interviews immediately before the movie's November 10 premiere in the United States.

"We were trying to move my shooting schedule around so I could be in New York in time. However, I have to shoot that day (in London) and it proved to be impossible for production to make it happen," she says in a statement.
At least that's perfectly clear.

What is more ambiguous is the content and approach of the movie itself.

Directed by Steven Shainberg (Secretary), Fur was expected to be a biography of photographer Diane Arbus.

Arbus was the photographer famous for her portraits of people regarded as being on the fringes of society.

Now, according to Variety magazine, the opening credits will carry a disclaimer: "What you are about to see is a tribute to Diane, a film that invents characters and situations that reach beyond reality to express what might have been Arbus's inner experiences on her extraordinary path."

Maybe Kidman just isn't keen on going all the way from London to New York to try to explain what that means.

I support her, no matter 'why' she cancelled. But I, as well, had read before that she'd be shooting, so I think it's rather that. (Though I can imagine she's not too angry about not having to face the paparazzi...)

Thanks for the article! I respect that Nic doesn't want the paparazzi butting into her personal life, and if by cancelling appearences is how she wants to do it then ok.
