'Rabbit Hole' role for Kidman
Actress to produce via her production shingle

By NICOLE LAPORTE
Kidman

Lindsay-Abaire

Nicole Kidman will star in and produce the bigscreen adaptation of David Lindsay-Abaire's Broadway play "Rabbit Hole" for Fox Searchlight.
Lindsay-Abaire will adapt.

Story concerns a happily married couple whose lives are disrupted after an unexpected tragedy and the intensely emotional, redemptive journey they must undertake to regain happiness.

Kidman will produce via her Fox-based production shingle Blossom Films.

Production and development of the pic will be overseen by Per Saari, Blossom's head of production and development.

Other films in development under Blossom's first-look deal with Fox include Jez Butterworth's "Headhunters," Karen Lutz's "Bachelorette Party" and an untitled thriller written by Simon Kinberg.

Kidman recently wrapped New Line's "The Golden Compass," the first film in Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" trilogy. She will next be seen in Noah Baumbach's upcoming pic for Paramount Vantage and in Warner Bros.' "The Invasion" opposite Daniel Craig.

Lindsay-Abaire wrote the first draft of "The Golden Compass." He also adapted the Cornelia Funke novel "Inkheart" for New Line.

Kidman is repped by CAA, Lindsay-Abaire by Gersh.

Could anyone tell me what "shingle" here means? Online references (such as this, this and this) have not shed any light on the matter.

Btw, thanks Meisha! beatingheart.gif

It means it's her production company. Another example is if a doctor hangs up a sign outside his office with his name on it - that's his "shingle."

Thanks for the news Meisha. rose4.gif

Another to be added for Blossom films. I look forward to seeing the first one released. Will it be Headhunters?
From past news she was planning to star in both Headhunters and Wedding Planners and now this one.

I must admit I thought the use of the word "shingle" strange as well. Is this maybe a more common US expression? happy.gif

I think the term "shingle" is perhaps more common in the US than Australia Foxy, but on the other hand it's not exactly what I'd call "common slang" on this side of the pond either. I've heard it used in the sense that narrows101 mentions. I think it may date from the days when most businesses were one-person affairs, before the age of corporations and internet, and starting your own business quite literary consisted of hanging your sign, i.e. a rectangular piece of wood, outside your door. So I extrapolated what the writer meant from that.

I had not been particularly excited about any of the projects I had heard about previously (Headhunters or Wedding Planners). But THIS sounds like something right up Nicole's alley, shades of Dead Calm - without the boat and the crazed killer, although the summary is vague enough that there's room to go in all sorts of direction: drama, horror, thriller, etc. The point is, something dark is afoot, and that is exactly the sort of thing Nicole is excels at, exploring the darkest parts of the human heart.

This is more a drama based on the Braodway play which I think was nominated for a Tony. Looks like another 'conduit' role for Nicole....but we'll see if it happens. Nothing is certain with Nicole and nearly all her films have been announced at the last minute and very rarely months in advance.

If it was reported in "Variety" I'm sure it's true - but be warned these things take years to do! Hugh has a few of those that were announced under his own production company also and they take forever to get to the big screen. I'm still waiting for his original movie musical that was announced in January 2005! It's still "in development."

The news has made it to various Broadway websites (you don't want to read the message boards about this - if the original star isn't doing it they usually trash who is):

Nicole Kidman to Produce and Star in Rabbit Hole Film
Back to the Article

by BWW News Desk

David Lindsay-Abaire will adapt his Broadway play Rabbit Hole for Nicole Kidman, who will produce and star in the big-screen version for Fox Searchlight, according to Variety.

Kidman's company, Blossom Films, will produce under Fox. Per Saari, Blossom's head of production and development, will oversee.

Kidman's recent endeavors include New Line Cinema's The Golden Compass, the first film in Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy, Noah Baumbach's upcoming film for Paramount Vantage, and Warner Bros.' The Invasion, opposite Daniel Craig. Kidman has starred in the films Cold Mountain, Eyes Wide Shut, and Moulin Rouge, among many others, and won an Oscar for her role in The Hours. She appeared on Broadway in the 1998 production of The Blue Room.

Lindsay-Abaire's play is, according to earlier press notes, "the story of Becca (to be played by Kidman) and Howie Corbett who have everything they could want, until a life-shattering accident turns their world upside down, and leaves the couple drifting perilously apart. Becca, who must also cope with the distractions of her reckless sister Izzy, and their opinionated mother, Nat, takes solace in her unlikely friendship with a neighborhood teenager, Jason, who might provide the key to lead her back from the darkest of places. The play is a bittersweet drama about finding hope in the lowest moments of our lives, and the paths we take to return to the light of day."

Rabbit Hole ran on Broadway last year at the Biltmore Theatre and received a Tony nomination for "Best Play." Cynthia Nixon won the Tony Award for "Best Actress in a Play," originating the role of Becca. Writer Lindsay-Abaire's credits include the first draft of The Golden Compass. He also adapted the Cornelia Funke novel Inkheart for New Line.  His other plays include Fuddy Meers and Kimberly Akimbo.

Oscar winner Nicole Kidman will star in the big-screen version of David Lindsay-Abaire's play Rabbit Hole, which will be released by Fox Searchlight Pictures, according to Variety. Rabbit Hole concerns a middle-aged couple whose life is destroyed when their young son is killed in a car accident. The play was seen on Broadway in 2006, starring Cynthia Nixon (who won the Tony Award for Best Actress ), John Slattery, and Tyne Daly in the leads.

Kidman appeared on Broadway in The Blue Room, for which she received a Theatre World Award. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her portayal of Virginia Woolf in The Hours. Her numerous other film credits include Cold Mountain, Moulin Rouge, and To Die For.

Lindsay-Abaire is the author of such plays as Fuddy Meers, Wonder of the World, and Kimberly Akimbo, as well as the book for the recently short-lived musical High Fidelity. His screenwriting credits include Robots and the currently filming Inkheart, starring Brendan Fraser.

Nicole Kidman Goes Down The Rabbit Hole
Nicole Kidman will star in the big-screen of Broadway play Rabbit Hole, it was announced today. Nicole’s company, Blossom Films, will produce under Fox Searchlight, David Lindsay-Abaire will adapt his play, and Nicole will also produce it. Here’s a brief synopsis:

[Rabbit Hole tells] the story of Becca (to be played by Kidman) and Howie Corbett who have everything they could want, until a life-shattering accident turns their world upside down, and leaves the couple drifting perilously apart. Becca, who must also cope with the distractions of her reckless sister Izzy, and their opinionated mother, Nat, takes solace in her unlikely friendship with a neighborhood teenager, Jason, who might provide the key to lead her back from the darkest of places. The play is a bittersweet drama about finding hope in the lowest moments of our lives, and the paths we take to return to the light of day.

Found this at Just Jared. The link also includes new stills from the Golden Compass (at least new to me.) Thanks, Meisha! :rose4

Seeing that Variety doesn't post things like this unless it's true I'm going to believe this. And this is very exciting. I know of the play and it was actually on Broadway during the time I was in New York, but I never got around to see it. This is a very juicy and dark role for Nicole. In fact, Cyntha Nixon (who played the role on Broadway) won a Tony for this.

Can't wait to hear more.
