hello[1].gif Well, I just watched the movie "Fur". It gives me new appreciation for Nicoles talent, but like Margo at the Wedding, it was one of those movies that I find very interesting in her choice of movies. She is a pneunominal actress! I haven't seen very many of her movies, but it makes me want to see some of her older ones that I haven't seen, and I want to watch To Die For again. When she playes a role, she makes you feel like she is really that person - she really takes you into the role. I have to say I enjoyed the movie, but its just wierd enough that I'm not sure I would recommend it to anyone, or they might think I was a little wierd! Does anyone else understand what I'm trying to say?!

I found it very interesting that Robert Downy, Jr.s name in the movie was Lionel, which we all know is Mr. Urbans middle name. Did she make this picture before she met Keith?

I work for a movie theater chain, so I found myself with a free DVD of the movie. There are a few perks where I work. Someone gave it to me who had no interest in Nicole or the movie, so I took it with pleasure.

Anyone else who would like to offer their opinion of the movie? I'm sure if I scrolled back several pages I could find a thread, but I hope its ok to start a new one instead. Foxy?

Thanks, Kay

She was making this movie when she and Keith were dating in the late spring/summer of '05.

Yes it is a very unique movie. And I understand what you mean by weird.

I wouldn't worry that people might think you are strange for recommending the movie.

I look at it this way. The director was trying to portray what was going on in the phyche of a woman who's life was changing from one existence to another. It's going to be a little strange. I think the makers of the movie did some interesting things. Just recommend it on the basis as being something different. If they watch it and don't like it well that's the way the cookie crumbles.

Just my two cents.

Recently I saw "Fur" for the first time.
I have no idea why, but my expectations werenīt very high.

But I was soo stunned. That movie is just so great.
To me this movie is one of the MOST UNDERRATED movies. I donīt know, why some critics could talk about it in a bad way. And I still wonder, why that movie wasnīt in cinema over here.
Fur is such a great arthouse/ indie film.

Nicole was soo brilliant as Diane Arbus, just amazing. thumbsup.gif
"We identify her roles with her" A.O. Scott, an American film critic said about Nicole.
That quote is perfect. When she is acting, she really makes you believe and convinces you, that she is not Nicole Kidman at that moment, but the character.
A few times I tried to see Nicole in a movie, so when she was playing a character, I begin to think at the beginning "Okay try to imagine it is nicole not the character" and like 5 minutes later, I see the character not Nicole any more.

To me her performance in Fur was Oscar - worthy. And it is a pity, that the Academy didnīt recognize that.
When I finished watching the movie I was like "Wow!" about the movie and Nicole. star01yellow.gif

And there is so much to analyse in it and what makes you think about some things.

But one thing was a mystery to me, What does the rabbit mean and stand for in the movie?

I agree with you!!

Fur is a great movie! Nic's stunning in it and she was ignored like always by critic and awards!

This movie is a very deep experience and weird, it makes me feel new feelings which I never felt before. This movie is not biographical but is an imaginary revisitation dreamlike of a myth like Diane Arbus, I think this film represents what there was inside Diane, what she thought, not our reality but her reality, this movie is an unique experience.
It's one of the most underestimated film in cinema history, because it's a different movie and often the different things scares people because they can't understand it and when people can't understand so they despise. Nicole is Diane here, she does not play Diane, how many actresses today could do these things?
The movie is unpleasant and it makes you feel badly, oppressed, like the freaks and like Diane. But people, today, don't want to feel the real feelings watching movies, but just they want to be hypnotized by the special effects, and they want feeling false and unreal emotions. That's the reason why Fur failed.

I hope I expressed my self understandably.

yes, "fur" is one of her best movies. it's through these kind of movies where she defines herself as an actress capable of performing small miracles on screen. it's a shame that they almost always are extremely underrated, like birth or dogville. here in germany "fur" went straight to dvd, something which hasn't happened to any other movie nic has done since coming to hollywood oh.gif
i was lucky enough to see "fur" at the oslo international film festival, where the audience seemd quite pleased with it happy.gif

You are right that Fur is a bit different from the norm of movies especially biopics. I enjoyed it alot, saw it four times in a row before taking it out of my DVD player happy.gif. It is not for everyone but I recommend that people see it happy.gif.

coffee2.gif Thanks for all your comments. Skanky, you are right - it is one of those movies that needs to be watched more than once to catch everyting. I thought one of the most interesting things in the movie was at the end when she was flipping thru the the photo album (which I assumed her husband put together for her) and there were 50 pages made for pictures of Lionel, but she had never taken even one! I must say it again - she is a wonderful and beautiful and very special talent!! rollin.gif

Yeah
and it is also a movie you discover something new, everytime you watch it.

It is one of her best performances and it kind of annoys me, that the critics could say something bad about the movie and that the academy and other award shows didnīt recognize that brilliant, amzing, wonderul performance of Nicole.

There is a thread on 'Fur' in the Movies section.
It is an unusual and slightly eccentric film, rubykay43, but don't think yourself eccentric for finding it fascinating. I, too, watched it four times on the large screen -most rare for me- I was fortunate to have had the situation to do this when it screened in Sydney last year. It's a film that needs more than one viewing, and I just don't go with the critics who, mostly, just see a film once and pan it for not fulfilling the kind of criteria they can tick off in little boxes. 'Fur' is certainly flawed, but then what films aren't-even the ones deemed worthy (by the critics) of five stars and armsful of Academy Awards?
If you are prepared to enter into the imaginative fantasy that Shainberg is trying to create in an attempt to 'explain' the life of Diane Arbus, one that led her into a life of taking photographs of people and situations that was quite groundbreaking for the time, you can become almost complicit in understanding how Diane might have viewed her world. There are so many aspects-it's a visually beautiful film, just another odd little world -and there are so many in this world.
Nicole's performance was just superb. Shame that the critics can't see past conventions. Also a shame that most critics don't have a clue about acting and the actual making of films.

beautifully said cinemasaver. thumbsup.gif

Most people today want to be fast entertained with super effects a superficial story. They donīt want to think about it or show their emotions when watching a movie "It is just a movie."

But those films like Fur, make you think a lot and you learn something and it is a rare movie. Most people do not know any more how to apprectiate it.
Plus the critics tell them it is "bad" and they donīt watch it in cinema and so such a wonderful movie bombs at the box office and Nicole is called "box office poison".
But they have NO idea.

Everyone should watch that movie. thumbsup.gif

exactly what I think!
In my opinion , we spend time on the movie we should learn something from it! or at least make us think something!
"Fur" is this kind of movie!

well, I've seen some critics said that the way they portrait Diane Arbus is totally nonsense. but LOOK AT the title! it's an IMAGINARY PORTRAIT of Diane Arbus! and I think this imaginary portrait is nice. It's not a documentary after all!
