Full Version: Interesting Tidbit About " The Rivals"

Remember quite a while back there was some write-up about Nic possibly taking on a role portraying Sarah Bernhardt to be produced/directed by Steven Spielberg? With the recent announced split of Spielberg/Dreamworks from Paramount to form a new venture, here's some interesting tidbit. Hmmm... I'm wondering if the project is still a "go" either at Paramount or at Spielberg's new venture.

QUOTE
Of 33 active, well-developed DreamWorks projects, Steven Spielberg and Stacey Snider ponied up about $17 million for 16-17 they will produce, such as "Cowboys and Aliens." Paramount has the right to cherrypick the ones it wants to co-finance.

Another 17 pictures -- including "The Rivals," starring Nicole Kidman and Marion Cotillard -- stay at Paramount, with Spielberg able to co-finance which ones he chooses. If he doesn't co-finance, and he's a producer or director on any of those projects, he'll get his 7.5% gross deal.

Thanks Meisha happy.gif.

I won't be surprised to see her name linked to this for a while if it is still being prepped, it is written/drafted by her acting coach after all.

I never heard about that one before either.
But Marion and Nicole on screen together (again after Nine) - great.

Does someone know what that movie would be about?
nicolefan19
I really hope this happens. And if I remember right, I thought she was suppose to star in it with Gwyneth Paltrow. But, I think the last thing I read about this was, what, four years ago?

If I remember correctly, the movie is about the actress Sandra Bernhardt and another actress who are rivals. That's the extent of what I remember about it.

It talks about the rivality between Sandra Bernhardt and Italian actress Eleonora Duse.

http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eleonora_Duse

Duse's repertoire was full of strong performances: from the realism of Giovanni Verga's Cavalry Rusticana to the Victorien Sardou and Alexandre Dumas. These roles were partes of the repertoire of the great French actress Sarah Bernhardt. Among the two actresses it was born soon a rivalry that divided the theatrical critics.

Sarah Bernhardt (Paris, October 22, 1844 – Paris, March 26, 1923)

Eleonora Duse (Vigevano, October 3, 1858 – Pittsburgh, April 21, 1924)

This movie is really intresting. I realy hope Nicole will do it. Paramount has to do this movie...
josie
I hope this comes about --

*Very interesting plot premise

*Excellent casting - I suppose Nicole will be Sarah and Marion will be Eleonora. Both Nicole and Marion are elegant beauties and are fine actresses.

I did my research and this sounds really interesting. It would be indeed fantastic, if they made this movie.
Sarah Bernhardt was also called "The Divine Sarah". And who else could play a goddess of dramatics, than Nicole thumbsup.gif

I looked them up in our "Who´s who" encyclopaedia and this is what I found (not so long, but when you don´t want to read all those huge articles on the internet, but still know, who both were, this is perfect )
QUOTE
Sarah Bernhardt (actually Bernhard)
French actress
(*22 October 1844 Paris - †26 October 1923 Paris)

The wonderful voice and her talent for acting emotional made Bernhardt becoming one of the most known and popular personages in the history of theatre.
After her apprenticeship as an actress she debuted at the Comédie Française in 1862. She became a sharer of this in 1872.
Beginning from 1880 she did successful tours through Europe, America and Australia and she inherited the “Théâtre de Nations” (which is called “Théâtre Sarah Bernhardt” until today) in 1899.
Sarah Bernhardt was a great tragic actress in the classical French drama, but she also shined in modern comedies of manners. She wrote novels, comedies and in 1907 she wrote her memoirs (English: “My Double Life” in 1908). She also was a talented sculptor and painter.

QUOTE
Eleonora Duse
Italian actress
(*3 October 1858 Vigevano/ Pavia - †21 April 1924 Pittsburgh)

Her career of the world – famous tragic actress in classic and modern roles began at the age of twenty years through international tours.
Duse played the sensitive type of women of the Art Nouveau. Passion and Raffinement des Fin de siècle connected with modern reality.
Her internalized and linguistically strong differentiated play became exemplary in the art of acting. She played plays of Sardou and Ibsen and she preferred the dramas of her friend D´Annunzio. Duse stopped acting at the age of 50 but she once again returned eleven years later.

John Madden?
nicolesgrace
I had to google him. I have never heard of this guy before. He is the one, who did "Shakespeare in Love".
Okay, I have to say this, I am a bit worried about that movie now. It sounds so promising and wonderful and the project itself has a huge Oscar potential (especially for Nicole). But this movie needs a one of the best directors.

I´d rather prefer Steven Spielberg himself or someone like Martin Scorsese.

But we have to wait and see what happens.

Oh btw I read that Nicole has been attached for this movie for longer now and that Eleonora Duse was first supposed to be played by Juliette Binoche (I read that they even met because of that movie).

I can't see the link but I do think Shakespeare in Love is a fantastic film (especailly Tom Stoppard's script is very brave and smart) alongside John Madden is talented director.
My favorite John Madden movie is Mrs Brown. Judi Dench gives a mind-blowing performance in this.

I agree and his film "Proof" with Gwynnet Palrow, Jake Gyllenhall and Anthony Hopkins is good not great, but the performances are superb, IMHO in Proof Paltrow gives her best performance to date, and should have nominated for Oscar for that one.

Though Scorsese or Spielberg would be nice too :) She should work with both of them one time!

Did you know that Satine´s idol in MR is Sarah Bernhardt?
Someone told me yesterday and I was like really!? I never realised that.

"... the duke is really taking the bite girl, with an patron like him, you could be the next Sarah Bernhardt"
"Oh Marie do you really think I could be like the great Sarah?"

Mr.Coulter
OMG great observation nicolesgrace rose.gif
