This is what a guy called Ian D. Smith thought about the movie:

"To be fair, I only saw a work print without finished opening or ending credits, finalized music or sound mixing. The editing will certainly be different when the film is released, but as it stand right now, the film moves slower than frozen molasses. Scenes drag on forever and fade edits permeate the movie. I never feel like I have a grasp on the Diane character - she really just comes across as a demure woman prone to some occassional breakdowns and who is totally obsessed with anything weird and/or furry. As a standalone film, it just is not engrossing, despite the eccentricities on display, good performances from Burrell and Downey and the great cinematography. No doubt research into the life of Diane Arbus may make this film more rewarding, but on its own it just does not come together, and the ending is very slight. All IMO. "

Thank you Sparkling_Diamond.
As this person said, it's his opinion and it's totally respectable. I think the editing of it will make it something else, something interesting to see. It's still all very raw probably.

Yes, it's his opinion..
Other people look at it as an Acadamy award nomination.
I think the editing will make it a lot better.
I'm very optimistic to this movie, and hope it will
be a great movie! happy.gif

Thanks for that article! :)

I respect his opinion, but obviously a finished film cannot be judged by the workprint. (Hence the term "workprint" - as in "working out the kinks" lol.gif)

lol.gif good one.

Yeah, that's when you realize how much the editing matters, and why they have to take so much time in the post-production. I know it will all turn out great, and I can't wait to the end of the year to watch the film.

I agree... an unfinished work cannot be judged ........ unless it is a good review in which case it is perfectly acceptable.

We have a "review" posted by skanky which thought the rough cut of the movie was excellent and thought Nicole gives her best performance to date.

This is what iamvirginiawoolf thinks about the rough cut:

"finally, i saw a rough cut of the film. Let me begin by saying that Nicole gave another great performance. No offense to Holly Hunter but Kidman in Fur is PITCH-PERFECT. The role and the way Kidman portrayed Arbus is not likeable in the sense that it's weird. But we are talking about performance here. Theron's role in Monster is so not likeable but she was remarkable. Again, Kidman used the same technique of relating through her eyes. Since it's a rough cut, i can't make a final criticism but the film is really a love it/*do not like* it movie. Though Nicole is very good in this movie, her performance does not rank with those in The Hours and Dogville. Worthy for an Oscar still"

Thanks for yet another opinion C81. rose4.gif clap.gif Not quite as good as the one skanky posted but promising!

PS. Sorry about the love/hate substitution. It happens automatically...even when it is ok to use it as in your post. eek.gif

I had read that review of Ian D Smith's over at IMDB but I think that we have to remember that's his opinion. Let's hope not too many share his opinion. I'm sure Nicole gave a very good performance since she has never let us down acting wise, but there are some people who do prefer the Julia Roberts, Meg Ryan type of acting and I notice Meg Ryan is his favourite actress.

Lots of good opinions. I still think it's just their opinions, even if they're probably more knowledgeable in the subject. I don't know. I think it's hard to tell at this very early stage. But thank you skanky and C81 for adding more opinions.

I try not to look at too many opinions before I see a movie, I don't like to be peprsuaded...even though when it comes to people I love, like Nicole, I know that no matter what, I will like the performance. I am already thinking this movie has alot of promise...we'll have to wait several months though sob.gif I can't wait for the Visiting and Fur to be released!!
