Nicolefan17, Fur is not a biopic, it is an imaginary tale on Diane Arbus, it is not telling the whole story of Diane Arbus per se, they've created a whole other dimension to it.  And from all that has been written about it, it seems to be more similar to her more quirky and darker work than traditional biopics, people who have seen it consider it to be something AMPAS doesn't usually go for.
*

Oh I know that, it may be an unconventional biopic but does it still not have the real person aspect to it? And if the subject matter isn't considered taboo, the academy HAS given some big cat. nominations to films, if they are actually good(which Fur looks like it's going to be), just look at Being John Malkovich(it got into some big cat. despite being considered 'odd') and Mullholand Dr.(hardly any big precursor love and it still got a Best Director nomination). It may be likely that Fur isn't getting like a BP nomination or anything, but it has a HUGE chance to get into acting and screenplay cat.

i really wonder why she's not getting enough love from the ampas or the sag awards or the critics choice and even the independent spirit awards. she's been doing mainstream and indies for quite a while now and absolutely deserves recognition. in fact, last night i was reading an article where charlize theron was given a special award for the films that she made (indies were mentioned especially monster, a movie which i personally think is waay overrated. as a whole, it wasn't great and charlize's performance was superb but less believable than naomi watts in 21 grams in my personal opinion). shouldn't nicole have gotten that? here she is with a handful of indie films that were extremely challenging and they give that special award to someone who did one indie film that was given all the hype. frankly, i've gotten tired of these award shows. i'm looking forward to fur and i absolutely trust nic's performance. unfortunately, i can't say the same from those award giving bodies.

With the independent spirit awards, I think Nicole's - I'll say it frankly - wealth and financial success, and her red-carpet image work against her. She's not hungry, she's not suffering or scratching. Then again, neither is charlize theron as far as I can see (although she has the hard-knock-life background on her side, the missing father, the farming in the mud in South Africa...irresistible stuff I'm sure to a certain mindset, or at least mitigates the fact that she looks stunning in a frock.)

I don’t know about that, actors like Julianne Moore, Frances Mc Dormand, Bill Muray, Sean Penn, Javier Bardem, Hilary Swank, Robert Duvall, Denis Quaid, Jeff Bridges, Matt Dillon, Sissy Spacek, Julie Christie, Morgan Freeman, Samuel L. Jackson, Zhang Ziyi, Judy Davis and so on,
are they hungry, suffering or scratching… ?
May be not the same red carpet image, and not the same financial success…

i agree red. i think she's deemed too untouchable by the ampas and too big of a star by the independent spirit. ugh! whatever. all i know is that she's already on her way to being a legend and no scandal to establish that one! happy.gif can i also point out how when i look at charlize, she seems to do what nic's done before. i'm not saying she's downright copying her and i definitely think she's a good actress but when i look at her on the red carpet and her film and commercial choices (costume institute gala after oscar win, cure for aids, dior commercial), she seems to be pitted against nicole. i don't think i have to say which side i'm on. they're great actresses who are scandal free but i beatingheart.gif nicole.

Wow what a exciting debate we have here!!!

So i would like to say a little bit myself:
I personally totally agree that it wasn´t really surprising that the Academy didn´t nominate her for Dogville and Birth because of obvious reasons.
And it does disturb me. I think it doesn´t matter if the movie is a bit too daring and crazy or Nicole is a bit too rich and famous, she should be acknowledged for her work anyway.
She definitley deserves it and for art´s sake, people should see her performance and not all the fuss around.

And about Charlize. I do think she is a very talented actress, but I think she fits the whole hollywood bill a lot better which is why she´s more pushed!!

I just hope Fur and other great movies of her coming up won´t be ignored and acknowqledged as much as they deserve it. wave.gif

What about the chances of Nicole in Fur for a Golden Globe and other film festival awards? (Just wondering...)
skankyoldwhore
NK has never had any problems with the Golden Globes, if her performance is critically acclaimed, she will be nominated. Despite outstanding critical acclaim at various festivals, she has only won once at Berlin so I won't put too much thought into her winning.

It has, kiha, but quite some time ago, thanks for the link. (Alas, it was too much to hope for updates yet.) I'm hoping that Picturehouse will take the opportunity to design an interesting and innovative site, in the spirit of the film itself.

So true. Ugh, now I'm going to be praying for a fairytale-ish type of site.

That would be very interesting and cool.

I am looking forward to this movie, yes let's hope the site is a plethora of information happy.gif

This was in Variety - interesting that both Nicole and Hugh movies are mentioned.

HOT TOPICS: Nicole Kidman and Robert Downey Jr. in Steven Shainberg's "Fur," which is a dark, dazzling, almost magical "Alice In Wonderland" look at the life of the fabled photographer Diane Arbus. Miss Kidman, a star who jumps between big-budget Hollywood and ambitious indies, is said to give the performance of her career, with Downey not far behind. At a recent screening for reps who worked on the film and with the actors, the room exploded into a standing ovation as the final credits rolled. One who was there said, "A more jaded audience you cannot imagine. I have never seen such a thing in my life." "Fur" will be released in November via Picturehouse.

Also highly thought of by those lucky enough to have seen it is Darren Aronofsky's "The Fountain," a spiritual sci-fi romance spanning a thousand years that stars Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz. (Brad Pitt was originally attached to this Warner Bros. film, but opted instead for "Troy.") Several cinema mavens spoke of both Aronofsky and Shainberg as "the real hope of the future for the industry. They create out of the box. It makes all this summer blockbuster **** even more depressing."

Ah, I'm torn...I WANT to see Fur - tomorrow if possible. lol.gif But I know we wouldn't deny Our Lady Nic her summer of love for anything on earth. (First comes love, then comes marriage ... then comes an Oscar AND a baby carriage.)

Ha Ha Ha! I forgot the other half - Mr. Keith Urban. Ok, I'll wait patiently (?) for November to come to give them more time to enjoy each other. Red, I love the last line of your post. It rhymes.

That's an ANCIENT children's schoolyard rhyme, consuelo, particularly meant to tease classmates who were rightly or wrongly percieved to be sweet on one another (I only added the "Oscar" bit to be a devil), so I can't claim any credit. (It would have been "and then comes But thanks anyway.

Wow... I just sat here and read everything posted since asking my stupid question (thanks for the answer, btw) and found it all very interesting. Like I said, I know nothing about the film industry - all the politics of the awards shows and stuff is interesting (the music awards shows, on the other hand, I can ramble about for days).

I've seen Dogville mentioned a lot... I watched it a while back and absolutely LOVED it. I think I could watch it 100 more times and not tired of it. Taboo subject matter - yeah, a bit (but God, what an ending). Oddly filmed - um, yeah... BUT Nicole was AMAZING in it. She should have gotten an award for pulling it off, but that's my opinion...

I've been reading a lot about Fur on here and y'all's (there's a word for you) excitement has me excited... I really want to see this movie. There's only one theatre (cinema, whichever you prefer) around here that shows the indie and less mainstream stuff, so here's hoping that the hype is huge and Fur shows up in major theatres or the Kentucky Theatre in downtown Lexington gets this film... they had March of the Penguins there... and they get the foreign stuff a lot... and the more I write the more my ignorance of all things movies shows through, so I think I'll shut up now, lol.
