If you click on the cover magazine on the VF site, you can see it mentioned on the cover.

VANITY Fair's got a piece on the late photographer Diane Arbus, who is memorialized in the coming $19 million film "Fur." Patricia Bosworth tells how her book made it to the screen starring Nicole Kidman. Naomi Watts and Toni Collette were up for the role. Also Samantha "In America" Morton, who blew it when her price was too high. Also Meg Ryan until she told the producers she'd really rather play poet Sylvia Plath. Originally the project was attached to Streisand, who wanted to direct plus play Diane. The joke then was that the movie would get retitled "The Singing Photographer." Anyway, Bosworth sent Nicole an Arbus self-portrait taken at age 21. Nicole's faxed thank you was: "It's a great inspiration."

Thanks Skanky! Hopefully someone will be able to scan it for us!

Thanks for that, skanky. (Samantha Morton's asking price was too high...compared to Nicole's? Morton is a terrific actress, but as far as salary I didn't even think they existed in the same solar system as one another.)

They aren't, Morton might have been asking for more. NK is known to reduce her price considerably for her indies so they didn't need to worry about that. They should count themselves lucky, Morton has been sacked from 2 projects this past year due to bad behaviour and almost derailed another (River Queen) causing the director to leave the project.

Thanks for letting us know. Sounds like it will be an interesting read.

thanks skanky! rose4.gif

I think it's time to PictureHouse release a trailler. If the movie comes out in November, 4 months ahead, they should start realeasing Teasers, Traillers and posters. I can't wait for the movie.

It's still summer, not many people will notice it, it'd just be a waste of money on promotion. People are still watching and talking about summer movies.

'Glad that Nic got the part. It looks like a very powerful movie to me. Thanks skanky for the link.

REALLY? I didn't know that, thanks. (The director left? I guess this particular director was lower down on the food chain?)

skanky's right about it being too soon in the season, nathi. I know I almost never go into the theaters between May and September because there's nothing to see - I'm not the summer audience. I think we'll see a trailer come September (especially if the test audience reactions are really as positive as we've been reading.)

$19 million is not a high cost to make a movie. If Nicole's name typically draws people in at the beginning (I read usually about $20 million box office the first week), the cost of making the movie should pay for itself the first week (hopefully....and hopefully it will pay for itself many times over). I would like Nicole to get some nominations for awards and secure some more roles well into the future. She is too talented to be passed over for choice roles. (and as far as the magic number 40, "40-year old actresses (supposedly) don't get roles", Nicole doesn't look anywhere near 39, she looks more like she's in her twenties.)

This is not the kind of movie that will make its money back in the first week, it will probably do the same business as Birth if released mid-range or lower if released in very limited number of cinemas a la The Hours and then make its money as it goes along. NK can open a mainstream movie in the summer to the tune of $20m but a Fall movie is different since it isn't the kind of movie everybody rushes out to see and it is rated R. Very few Fall movies make their money back or make substantial profit. Birth, Dogville, Cold Mountain were barely successes. As for securing roles, NK doesn't need to worry about securing roles, she has directors and producers lining up to work with her, she has her own production company, there is little chance of being passed over for roles in the future, very few performers have directors and producers battling with studios for them.

Gosh - I learn something new with every thread. Skanky you are a walking encyclopedia. My hats off to you lady.

I'm just as glad Morton played the money game - it's the true artiste that worries not about the fee in order to further her craft. After all, the legacy you leave is not how much money you amassed but the work you left behind. That is the heart and soul of a true artiste. Such is Nicole. Grab a plum role if you're an actress and revel in it already regardless of what they pay you!!

I'm very much looking forward to this movie. happy.gif

Morton is a great actress but also very problematic. She was meant to be in Pride and Glory, a movie that was shooting around April/May, she was told to leave and replaced by another actress because she was being very difficult, I can't remember the name of the other one but she was booted off, too. She caused a lot of problems on the set of River Queen, so much trouble that the director left, only for the cinematographer to pick up the job and then the director came back for the wraps and editing work, this story has been widely reported before River Queen was released, thankfully, the movie apparently turned out fine.
NicoleFan17
On ET they talked to the author of the book the movie is based from, and talked about all the stuff we knew already(how long it took to make it, who else was being considered for the role, etc) BUT they did show the pics of Nicole and Robert Downey Jr. we have never seen before, and the article itself looked pretty long.

I'm ready for some scans, LOL.

Skanky, Birth was a Box Office flop as far as what I've read...do you think Fur will be considered a box office flop, also? I sure hope not! I mean the bankability of an actor is really important in their career and I'd *do not like* to see all of Nic's movies do poorly at the box office.

Bankability is not important to a career, it is important to the few who choose to let it run their career. If you look at NK's work, it is mostly indies/arthouse/mainstream dramas, these don't make money and Nicole has never had any bankability since she arrived in Hollywood 16 years ago because she rarely makes movies people go to see in droves, it is only recently that she has been able to open a movie at about $20m, she was never able to do that. People who hire NK for their movies, hire her for her talent not the fact that she can make hits, infact, she has only had about 3 hits after the combined domestic and foreign BO. People who hire her know that whether they pay her small or large amounts of money, she will give them all she has got, that's why Joel Silver paid her $16m after Bewitched flopped, it didn't matter, they are paying for what she can do because the directors, producers demand that it is her they want. That's why she can work on a movie with a budget of $10m and get a very low salary for it without much drama. She has been in Hollywood for 16 years, she is not known as a hit maker, she is known as an actress with predigree. She has more flops/disappointments compared to hits but it is the strength/weaknesses of those movies that are analysed, not how much they made, really. Infact, like polaris said once, if she chooses to simply make her small, more complicated films, she'd be better off, sure the money will be significantly low but her work would continue to be great.

Actors/actresses (Movie stars) don't stop making movies because the movies flop, actors/actresses stop making movies because their work doesn't have much to it and all they are known for is the last hit movie they made, not the kind of work they do or did.

Fur is not going to be a big opener, it will be a pleasant surprise if it makes its money back. Her not making hits is not something that her fans should worry about, NK doesn't worry about it either. She has said on many occasions, her BO is not what makes her career, it is the work she does that makes her career.

Red - my thoughts exactly! lol.gif I have just skimmed the piece in VF (I'm a subscriber) and from that brief perusal, I see that Nicole's interest was like a magic touch in getting this project out of a long limbo (20 odd years of changing hands and disappointing turns) into actuality. I am most impressed, though not surprised, that Nicole's interest or perhaps even the indication of her interest can revive a project. I CAN'T wait to see this film. I have high expectations.

Thanks for the news skanky rose4.gif . I look forward to seeing the magazine for more details. I expect someone will scan it before it reaches Australia happy.gif

That was lovely of Patricia Bosworth to inspire Nicole happy.gif

nicolefan17, was that Friday's ET they talked about Fur? We do not get that til Monday here (such a long time to wait). I will make some video for us.

nicolefan22 thanks for the pics. We sort of have them on the NKU Fur page, but only tiny and we point to the site. The reason for this is there is a request not to post those photos anywhere. So we cannot have them here. Best to just put the link to the site where you found them. But thanks all the same happy.gif

Thanks for the news....look forward to some scans hopefully as I don't get Vanity Fair.

I thought Fur was only loosely based on Patricia Bosworth's book. Has anyone actually read the book? I forsee a slight increase in book sales for Bosworth lol.gif .

whether is opens big or not (probably the latter) doesn't matter. It could be a sleeper hit and gain a greater audience through good word of mouth. There are so few well written scripts/movies with actual substance behind the characters and plot. If not at the box office, they'll make their money back in rentals and DVD sales.

I admire the choices she makes...it's not for the money, it's for the art.

Yes, it is loosely based on it, Fur covers about 4 months of Arbus' life but they did adapt her book for the movie. I wonder what will happen because at the time of the book's release, 20 years ago, it quite divided its readers so you have a book that was deemed too sensationalised and a movie that's also an imaginary portrait. It gets more interesting lol.gif.
gracie
Thank you very, very much, Skanky, for your great response to my question on bankability and box office flops. That really puts things into perspective for me and is encouraging. I won't worry about the bankability or abundance of roles now for Nicole. I believe when she accepts new roles that she will continue to give directors, producers, studios all she's got in talent, abilities, effort and dedication as well as her time in promoting the films. happy.gif rose4.gif rose4.gif

Thanks Skanky...did not know it's been 20 years since the book. I only hope they emphasize the fact that Fur is an imaginary portrait. I have already read of some rumblings that Nicole looks nothing like Arbus and with Nicole the media have the tendency to make even the smallest issue into the biggest controversy.

Wiggle, that just shows you they gotta find something to complain about when there's really nothing. It appears to me they should be damn grateful that some actress (Nicole Kidman!!) finally signed on and stayed on (because it seems she really believes in the concept and project and also because one of the things I admire about Nicole is her love of indie and or alternative stories and scripts...) and gave this movie a fighting chance after it was shunted around for so many years.

This is one of the things I always find interesting when it comes to NK and her work, the fact that she can so easily turn people into a tizzy lol.gif, she is such a divisive performer.

I saw a preview of FUR last night on EXTRA. They talked tot he author as well & showed the pictures of Nicole & Downy, Jr. that are in Vanity Fair. She was very complimentary of Nicole. She said she knew the project was in good hands with her.

Diane Arbus' portraits are very interesting. I had never seen any before. Thanks.

is it possible to have the scans????
thankyou... praying.gif

is very strange because of this film we known little...
it's a small production, and I don't wait a big result at the box office...
but many reviwes are good....very good..
i guess that the film is much attending... then why we must wait for much time for being able to see a trailer??? oh.gif

I just simply can't wait, i'm dying to see this movie!!! sob.gif

Skanky, I hear you and IMO Nicole probably prefers that she polarizes audiences or at least generates such different responses and reactions than getting nothing or no buzz at all. I feel artists accept the criticims that come with the praise they seek - unless the criticism is personal as opposed to professional.

Random thought....LOL

Some of these photographs remind me of a psych test I took. A friend of mine has sister who was getting her Ph.D in Psychology, and needed a Guinea pig...ME! Anyway...she had a set of photos and you had to look at the photo and make up a before, middle and an end to what was happening in the picture. It's much harder than it sounds.

Even though some of these compositions look simple, they are complicated works of art.
