VIDEO: Trailer - Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus
Fur is a fairy tale at heart, which becomes clear as soon as Diane Arbus (Nicole Kidman) finds a key in her drainpipe that leads her to a magical world upstairs from her apartment. Indeed director Steven Shainberg soon flourishes a copy of Alice in Wonderland before our eyes, and a white rabbit.
The film is a strange fantasy which postulates that Arbus, prior to her celebrated 1960s career as an art photographer, was able to free herself from an oppressive marriage and enter the world of freakdom thanks to an eccentric, fur-covered neighbour (Robert Downey jnr, whose get-up might be meant to suggest the Cowardly Lion).
Kidman plays Arbus as a Stepford Wife gone wild: she has a practised way of signalling repression, but she's less convincing as a incipient free spirit
