BTW, these are some of the same critics who hand out critics awards and as far as I've known, NK has rarely been voted out of the top 10 in the performance areas every year this poll is conducted and yet they show her little love publicly. As seen here, she and JJL are both in the top 10 of their categories and yet, they are barely mentioned in year-end awards.

So the question is...What does that tells us about "the awards"?

It's all about critics' darlings and who they want to see as an Oscar nominee?

So it's more "political" than anything else.

Thanks, Skanky. rose4.gif This is very interesting! Here's how Nic compares to these heavily hyped Golden Globe Best Actress nominees:

Keira Knightley ("Atonement") is #29 on this list, tied with Lindsey Lohan ("I Know Who Killed Me") among others.

Cate Blanchett ("Elizabeth: The Golden Age") is not even mentioned. Instead her performance for "I'm Not There" is listed here in the Best Actress category, coming in at #10.

Angelina Jolie ("A Mighty Heart") is #16 on the list.

Exactly Meisha, exactly!

In 2004, she was 7th (Dogville) and 15th (Birth) in an overall poll of actors and actresses, 5th and 7th on the actress list and yet that year she got no critics award:

David Thomson has been writing a column on the Oscars for The Guardian and in his write ups for B Actress and BS Actress, that NK and JJL should be nominated but that the only one who may be able to is JJL but NK won't because she is out of favour at the moment but the tide will turn again and that NK is a fighter and will be back!

I love this man.

I so agree with him! I get so disgusted with the games that Hollywood plays and the same in the music world!! Whomever is the "it" person right now is all they can think about and the money they rake in, of course! oh.gif

Thanks for the links, Skanky. rose4.gif

Very interesting observations from Mr. Thomson! I still can't get over that as early as the Toronto Fim Fest, many critics were ready to hand the Oscars and GG awards to certain actresses in those categories, even though the films have not been released yet, and never mind there were still many more months to go before the end of 2007!

Perhaps the Writers strike causing the GG award show to be canceled is a blessing in disguise, as it gives people the opportunity to examine the relevance of these awards and award shows, and what they really mean and stand for.

Awards are always political. I am not sure why Nicole is out-of-favour with the critics except that she doesn't consult them for her roles, because her acting method is the same for all roles. However, she is the best in my books and I give her the happygolucky award for taking a step out of your comfort zone roles. happy.gif

I totally disagree. I think Nic is always different in every role she plays. Take for example The Others and The Hours: she's totally different.

I now why she's out of favor: she's unpredictable and not common, she does what she wants without ask the report to anyone, she can do everything and the critcs can't schematize her or catalogue her. The don't know how to define Nicole or subject her, and you don't know how much is uncomfortable an actress when she is not tameable...

I agree she is different in every role but the method of layering the character is the same. That is what makes her a great actress, because she can crawl into a character so different from what she is and portray it so believably.

Is believably a word eek.gif

I disagree with his assessment. He seems to be saying the only way Nicole gets noticed is if there is sympathy for her that has little to do with her performances.

I do, however, agree with his assessment that "The Golden Compass" was NOT correctly marketed in the US and that is the reason for it's underferforming in that market.
